Carl Sagan mention Jennie Wade "to demonstrate that wars in this age will not only take lives of trained soldiers, but also innocent civilians".

Mary Virginia " Jennie" Wade was an inhabitant of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania amid the War of Gettysburg. When she was just 20 years old, she was the main (some say there was at least one more civilian victim) direct non military personnel loss of the fight, when she was shot by a stray shot in  1863. The house where she was murdered is presently a famous tourist spot and historical center called the "Jennie Wade House."
