The immune system refers to the defense mechanism of the body against the infectious organisms as well as other invaders. With the help of a series of steps, it is called an immune response. This system mainly attacks the organisms as well as substances which invade the body systems and results in the disease.
This system is usually segregated into two categories, namely,
1. Innate immune system.
2. Adaptive immune system.
Innate immunity refers to the nonspecific defense mechanism which comes into play quickly or within a few hours of appearance of the antigen into the body. Such mechanisms involve physical barriers like chemicals found in the blood, skin, and the immune system cells which mainly attacks the foreign cells found in the body.
This response is activated by the chemical properties of the antigen. The anatomical barriers of this system include skin that involves sweat, flushing, desquamation, and organic acids, a gastrointestinal tract that includes peristalsis, bile acids, gastric acids, digestive enzyme, respiratory airways that includes surfactant, defensins, and eyes that includes tears.
On the other hand, adaptive immunity is the antigen-specific immune response. This response is known to be more complex as compared to the innate one. The antigen is first processed and then recognized. Once the antigen is recognized, the adaptive immune system produces an army of the immune cells which is designed to attack that particular antigen. This also involves a memory which produces future responses against the specific antigen.
