A good therapist would help a depressed person to combat their negative thoughts by changing their thought processes and world view. The thought processes would be to encourage them to try to be grounded and live in the moment ie be aware the connection to the earth and of one's own body and one's immediate surroundings. Also, one technique is to have them count their blessings ie they may have little money but be in good physical health, have grandchildren, and have certain unique skills that many people don't have for example.
