A pH less than 7 is acidic. A pH greater than 7 is basic. The pH scale is logarithmic and as a result, each whole pH value below 7 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value. For example, pH 4 is ten times more acidic than pH 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than pH 6.

A solution with a pH of 5 is 10,000 times more acidic than a solution with a pH of 9.

What is pH?

pH of any solution is define as the negative logarithm of the concentration of H⁺ ions present in the solution and it will be represented as:

pH = -log[H⁺]

After removing log euqation becomes as

[H⁺] = [tex]10^{-pH}[/tex]

From the equations it is clear that each single value of pH is greater by 10 times as compared to the succeeding value of pH because it is negatively exponentially depends on base 10. Means 6 is 10 times more acidic than 7 and this is the case only when the value of pH is less than 7.

So, a solution of pH 5 is (10×10×10×10) 10000 times more acidic than a solution of pH of 9.

Hence solution of pH 5 is 10,000 times more acidic.
