Based on courtly love songs and heroic legends, the attribute which was most important for a knight was chivalry. Chivalry is defined as "a code of conduct associated with the medieval institution of knighthood which developed between 1170 and 1220." This involves military bravery, individual training and service to others, which was supposed to evolve around honor and nobility.
