The coating on a plate 2 m in diameter is cured by placing it symmetrically below an electrically heated plate also 2 m in diameter. The emissivity of the heater is 0.7 and that of the coating is 0.4 and both surfaces can be considered to be grey. During the curing process the temperature of the heater and the coatings are 1100 K and 550 K respectively, and the assembly is exposed to black surroundings at 295 K. The top of the heater and the under-side of the plate are insulated. (a) Calculate the electrical power input to the heater if the plates are separated by 0.4 m. (b) Determine also the net rate of heat transfer to the coated plate. Convective heat transfer can be neglected.
