Jane’s Super-Secret New Product Machine (below) sits on one side of a large warehouse structure. The entire machine is approximately 20 feet long, with 5 feet of clearance required at either end. Raw materials go into one end, and finished product comes out the other end, dropping neatly into packages. The machine has a separate control/monitoring station, which can operate themachine wirelessly. Human interaction with the mechanical parts of themachine (pictured below) is limited, only needing a few minutes every hour to load raw material and remove finished product. The machine is relatively quiet during this loading/unloading period. About 20-30 people work in various areas of the warehouse. The machine has been found to be set up correctly and working properly, with proper maintenance performed at required intervals. Many are still annoyed by how loud the machine is, since the sound reverberates in the building which makes it difficult to communicate, even on the opposite side of the building. This new machine is critical to the future success of the business. Without it, the company will most likely go bankrupt. The company does not have funds to purchase a different machine, so replacing it is not an option.
