There was trouble with Sicily. It was a land power versus a sea power. Expected advantage to go to Carthage and it was for awhile. Rome did not have as good ships, but they observed Carthage ships. The Romans countered Carthage's sea power by building ships and recruited poor citizens as sailors and rowers (capite censi=head count). Invented the corvus ("crow") to board ships. It was like a gang-plank with a very strong spike used to stick into the deck. They were better at fighting on land and it gave them advantage. It was a difficult struggle, but Rome won. Rome got Sicily and indemnity (losers have to pay for war). By 227 BCE, Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica were Roman provinces.______________
