During the late 19th century the rapid influx of immigrants and a large number of poor laborers gave rise to political machines that were concern of providing basic social services in exchange for votes.

These political machines were organizations inside political parties headed by powerful men. They wanted to maintain the political control of their respective location.  In the late 19th century these political machines tried to build a large voter base, basically with immigrants in cities such as Boston, New York, and Chicago. The political machines performed favors to these immigrants or poor people like offering jobs or any kind of aid.
