What are Porter’s five competing forces?
- A tool for analyzing a company's competitive environment is Porter's Five Forces Framework. It uses industrial organization (IO) economics to extract five forces that control the level of competition and, consequently, the profitability (or lack thereof) of an industry.
- An industry is considered "unattractive" when the combined impact of these five forces lowers overall profitability. An industry that is getting close to "pure competition," in which all firms' available earnings are being pushed to average profit levels, would be the least desirable.
- The five-forces perspective is known for being created by Harvard University's Michael E. Porter. In 1979, the Harvard Business Review published this paradigm for the first time.
