Nation is a part of an individual as it gives an individual a sense of belonging.
It is a subjective feeling one shares with a group of people about a nation, regardless of one's legal citizenship status and this refers as national identity. In psychological term it is a recognition of feeling "we" and "they". A shared feeling of national identity and a realization that a people group has a similar ethnic, linguistic, and cultural history are also components of a national consciousness. The first step in historically creating a nation has been a growth in national awareness.
It is just being conscious of the numerous attitudes and views that people hold around topics like family, traditions, cultural norms, gender roles, etc.
