Who is Madeleine Leininger?
Madeleine Leininger, a nursing theorist, educator, and the creator of the idea of transcultural nursing, lived from July 13, 1925, until August 10, 2012. Her contributions to nursing theory center on the examination of what it means to care, first published in 1961.
Leininger was born on July 13th, 1925. After receiving her nursing diploma from St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing, she went on to Benedictine College and Creighton University to receive her undergraduate degrees. She graduated from Catholic University of America with a Master of Science in Nursing. Later, she pursued a PhD in cultural and social anthropology at the University of Washington. At least three honorary doctorates were bestowed upon Leininger.
After serving as the dean of the nursing schools at the Universities of Washington and Utah, Dr. Leininger held faculty posts at the Universities of Cincinnati and Colorado. She was an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and an emeritus nursing professor at Wayne State University.
