Iran= Executive branch: supreme leader and president Legislative: unicameral Judicial: supreme court and subordinate courts

How Power Is Distributed

Belgium = Divided among three branches. Monarch is bound by constitution that explains his or her duties. Made up of communities and regions that have authority of their areas.

Iran= Equally between branches, although legislative is unicameral

How Leaders Are Chosen

Belgium = Monarchy is hereditary. Parliament is elected by citizens. Following elections, the majority party appoints prime minister or the monarch chooses the prime minister with approval by parliament.

Iran= Supreme leader appointed for life by Assembly of Experts. President elected by absolute majority popular vote in two rounds (if needed) for a four-year term.

Type of Freedoms Citizens Have or Do Not Have

Belgium = Freedom of expression and belief, freedom to assemble

Iran = Assembly, association, and expression often suppressed
