Imagine you have a large cube made up from 27 smaller cubes (3 × 3 × 3). Now, imagine dipping that large cube into a pot of orange paint so the whole outer surface is covered, and then breaking the large cube into its smaller 27 cubes. How many cubes will have 3 painted sides? 2 painted sides? 1 painted side? 0 painted sides?

Respuesta :

When the Large cube is broken into its 27 smaller cubes :

  • 12 cubes will have 2 painted sides
  • 8 cubes will have 3 painted sides
  • 6 cubes will have 1 painted side
  • 1 cube will have 0 painted side

When the cube is completely immersed into the orange paint the exterior parts of the cube will be painted completely.  A cube has equal length, width and height hence all the smaller cubes will have the same dimensions.

Following the simple analogy of the attached cube . The number of cubes ( smaller ) and the number of side that would be painted are as follows :

12 cubes will have 2 painted sides

8 cubes will have 3 painted sides

6 cubes will have 1 painted side

1 cube will have 0 painted side

Hence we can conclude that;  12 cubes will have 2 painted sides, 8 cubes will have 3 painted sides, 6 cubes will have 1 painted side, and 1 cube will have 0 painted side.
